Network Check

What can a website see about me?

In short: every website you visit is told your internet address, and from that, roughly who your internet company is and roughly where. It is not told your name or your street address.

The network comes from a public list of which company announces which addresses. The place is a guess from a public database, and it is often off by a town or two, because it points at your internet company's equipment, not your house. The lookup runs on our own server, and your address is not sent to anyone else.

This page includes GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind, available from https://www.maxmind.com.

What a typical website can see

  • Your internet address, and the company that gave it to you.
  • An approximate place, usually the nearest city or region.
  • Your browser, your device type and your language, as shown above.
  • Which of its own pages you looked at, and when.

What it cannot see

  • Your name, your street address or your phone number, unless you type them in.
  • The other devices in your home, or the files on your computer.
  • Anything you do on other sites, unless an ad or tracking company is on both.

Why your home network still matters

Your internet address is the address of your router, the box that connects your home to the internet. Anyone can send a message to that address. Almost always the router ignores them. If a setting such as remote access is switched on, the router answers, and that is the only way someone outside can start trying to get in. Closing those doors takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

Different services can show a slightly different place for the same address. These are other companies' sites, so we cannot vouch for what they show: ipchicken.com and ip.zscaler.com.
