Common questions about Network Check
Is it safe to use? What does it look at? Does it keep my information? Plain answers to the questions people ask most.
Is it safe to use?
Yes. It only looks. It never tries to log in, never changes anything and never installs anything on your computer. You tick a box to say you are at home, and it checks only the internet connection you are using right now.
What does it actually do?
Our server tries to connect back to your home internet address, the way a stranger on the internet would, and checks a short list of common doors (called ports). If something answers that should not, we tell you in plain words and link to a guide.
Does it keep my information?
Your internet address is held in the server's memory for up to an hour so one connection cannot run the check again and again. It is not written to a database and we do not save your results. See the privacy page for the full list.
Can I check someone else's internet?
No. It can only check the connection you are visiting from. That is on purpose, so it cannot be used to look at anyone else.
If I get a good result, am I safe?
Not necessarily. A good result only means nothing risky can be seen from the internet. It cannot see inside your home, whether your phones, TVs and computers are up to date, or how strong your Wi-Fi password is. Keep automatic updates turned on.
It found something. What now?
Do not panic. Each finding links to a guide that says what it means and how to fix it. The easiest fix is often to call your internet company. You can also see all the fix guides.
How do I look inside my home too?
Network Check Home Scan is a free Windows program that looks at the devices on your own network. It runs on your computer and sends nothing anywhere.
Does it cost anything?
No. The check and the guides are free. The site shows ads, and some guides link to Amazon search results for equipment. Those pages say so, and the links never change what the guides tell you to do.
Who makes it, and how do I reach them?
Network Check is made by Frequency 42 LLC (42 O'Clock Studios). Email support@frequency42.com.
Not comfortable doing this? That is okay.
You do not have to do this alone. You can ask a family member, call your internet company, or take your router to a local computer repair shop. Take your time and ask for help instead of guessing.
Want a professional to look at it? Frequency 42 is the company that makes Network Check, and it offers IT help. You can email support@frequency42.com and ask whether they can help with this.
