Xfinity gateway: sign in and lock it down

Plain steps for an Xfinity gateway: use the Xfinity app to check port forwarding and your connected equipment.

This page is for people with a Xfinity router. Menu names change from one model and software version to the next. If yours does not match, look for the words in bold, or search the maker's support site for your model number. You can always call your internet company instead.

The Xfinity app is the usual way to manage your gateway. The old 10.0.0.1 page is switched off for many customers.

Change the admin password

Your Xfinity account protects the gateway. Keep that account secure with a strong password.

Turn off remote access

On the xFi gateway, settings are changed through the Xfinity app and your Xfinity account.

Turn off UPnP

We could not confirm whether your gateway lets you change UPnP. If you want it off, ask Xfinity. More about UPnP.

Check the port forwarding list

Open the Xfinity app, choose WiFi, then View WiFi equipment, then Advanced Settings, then Port forwarding. You can edit or delete any forward there. On the xFi gateway, port forwarding can only be changed in the app. If you are not sure what an address in that list is, see Which device is this?

Keep it updated

Your internet company normally looks after updates for equipment it supplies. Ask Xfinity if you are unsure. Is my router too old?

What we checked

These steps match our other router guides. Xfinity's own app screens change from time to time.

Not comfortable doing this? That is okay.

You do not have to do this alone. You can ask a family member, call your internet company, or take your router to a local computer repair shop. Take your time and ask for help instead of guessing.

Want a professional to look at it? Frequency 42 is the company that makes Network Check, and it offers IT help. You can email support@frequency42.com and ask whether they can help with this.
