Spectrum router: sign in and lock it down
Plain steps for a Spectrum router: use the My Spectrum app to check port forwarding and your equipment.
This page is for people with a Spectrum router. Menu names change from one model and software version to the next. If yours does not match, look for the words in bold, or search the maker's support site for your model number. You can always call your internet company instead.
The My Spectrum app is the usual way to manage a Spectrum router.
Change the admin password
Your Spectrum account protects the router. Keep that account secure with a strong password.
Turn off remote access
On Spectrum-supplied routers, settings are changed through the My Spectrum app and your Spectrum account.
Turn off UPnP
We could not confirm whether your router lets you change UPnP. If you want it off, ask Spectrum. More about UPnP.
Check the port forwarding list
Open the My Spectrum app, go to Services, then Network Equipment, tap your router, and scroll to Advanced Settings, which includes port forwarding. These features work on routers that Spectrum supplied. If you are not sure what an address in that list is, see Which device is this?
Keep it updated
Your internet company normally looks after updates for equipment it supplies. Ask Spectrum if you are unsure. Is my router too old?
What we checked
These steps match our other router guides. Spectrum's own app screens change from time to time.

Not comfortable doing this? That is okay.
You do not have to do this alone. You can ask a family member, call your internet company, or take your router to a local computer repair shop. Take your time and ask for help instead of guessing.
Want a professional to look at it? Frequency 42 is the company that makes Network Check, and it offers IT help. You can email support@frequency42.com and ask whether they can help with this.
