AT&T router: sign in and lock it down

Plain steps for an AT&T router: sign in at 192.168.1.254 with the Device Access Code from the label.

This page is for people with a AT&T router. Menu names change from one model and software version to the next. If yours does not match, look for the words in bold, or search the maker's support site for your model number. You can always call your internet company instead.

Open a web browser on a device connected to your AT&T Wi-Fi and type 192.168.1.254. The 10-digit Device Access Code is printed on the label on your gateway.

Change the admin password

Your Device Access Code is the key to the settings page. Keep the label private, and do not read the code to anyone who phones you.

Turn off remote access

On an AT&T gateway, the settings page opens from inside your home with the Device Access Code. Call AT&T if you want to know whether anything outside your home can reach it.

Turn off UPnP

We could not confirm whether your gateway lets you change UPnP. If you want it off, ask AT&T. More about UPnP.

Check the port forwarding list

Choose the Firewall tab and enter the code again if asked, then NAT/Gaming to see port forwarding. The Smart Home Manager app shows your connected devices and lets you block one. If you are not sure what an address in that list is, see Which device is this?

Keep it updated

Your internet company normally looks after updates for equipment it supplies. Ask AT&T if you are unsure. Is my router too old?

What we checked

These steps match our other router guides. AT&T's own screens change from time to time.

Not comfortable doing this? That is okay.

You do not have to do this alone. You can ask a family member, call your internet company, or take your router to a local computer repair shop. Take your time and ask for help instead of guessing.
